Blue Crowned Conures - Hand Reared in Devon
THE BLUE CROWNED CONURE (Aratinga acuticaudata) (otherwise known as Sharp Tailed) As featured in the film 'Paulie'
The Blue-crowned is one of the sweetest and most laid-back of all the Aratinga Conure group. Of course, individuals often dramatically vary in temperament and disposition, and much depends on how they are socialized as babies and in their various human interactions. Yet in general, the Blue-crowned has proven itself to be well-suited for human companionship as a good-natured pet.
The Blue-crowned Conure is also a favorite among many conure lovers. These lovely parrots are affectionate, smart, playful and a joy to be around.
Blue Crowns just love to be pampered. Their intelligence enables it to learn quickly. A blue crown conure can be taught to perform several tricks, such as sticking out their tongue, waving their foot and kissing.
The Blue-crowned Conure has gained fame after being featured in "Paulie" - the story of a talking parrot and his adventures while trying to return to Marie - the little girl who raised him.
Like all Conures, the Blues love to climb and play, they need to be provided with a cage that allows them to move around freely with toys to entertain themselves with. Boredom is often the most common cause for destructive behavior.
Description:
The Blue-crown conure is regarded as one of the most intelligent conures. It is primarily green. The blue crown conure has a small light-blue color on the top of the head and has the characteristic Conure white-patch eye. In the wild, the blue crown conure is mostly found in Venezuela, Columbia and Brazil.
Blue-crowned Conures are quite large, generally growing to about fourteen and a half inches. Their wingspans are generally around seven and a half inches; and they weigh between 115-130 grams.
Although the birds are primarily green, the crowns of their heads are blue. There are two shades of blue on a Blue-crowned Conure's head: a bright, darker blue and light, sky blue-tinged shade. Their green bodies offer a variety of green shades. They have the white eyepatch typical of Conures and their bills are usually bi-colored.
The top mandible is horn-colored and the bottom mandible is usually colored black. The Conures with bi-colored bills are often called Sharp-Tailed Conures. The underside of a Blue-crowned Conure's tail is a variegated shade of red, ranging from pink-red to dark rust.
This species is sexually dimorphic: male Blue-crowned Conures have larger white eyepatches than females, and the feathers of their ceres tend to be longer.
Expected lifespan ranges from 25 to 30 years.
